The Showdown: Tale Of The Tape

On Saturday, the ultimate showdown in Bueno family history will go down on the streets of Colton.

The ARMC 5K will play host to the race within the race and will pit brother versus brother in a way that no other sporting event has.

So what better way to prepare than to have a complete breakdown of the race?

LB

vs.

Danny

Tale of the Tape

LB
A
ge: 34
Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 188

PRs:
5K - 25:05; 10K - 50:24; Mud Run: 1:06:54; 15K - 1:21:48; Half marathon: 2:14:50; Marathon: 4:42:26. Also participated in Ragnar Relay Las Vegas.

Athletic Claim to Fame:
Ran a marathon in February.

Preferred Sport of Choice:
Running.

Why Will He Win?
LB is a determined and motivated runner who is able to meet goals he sets for himself. This is another goal and he shall see it through.

Why Won't He Win? Speed is not the name of LB's game. He needs to run a smart race and have some things go his way in order to have a chance.

Motivation to Win:
Danny is the stronger/faster/more-talented brother, so this victory would give LB some serious bragging rights over his younger brother for the first time in a long time.

Race Strategy Should Be:
Trip Danny. Otherwise, stay as close to him as possible, whether it's in front of him or behind him. Let Danny get a too-far lead and all will be lost by the first 10 minutes.

In His Own Words: "Do I think I can beat my brother in a 5K race? I wouldn't have challenged him had I not felt that. But am I expecting a win? The only thing I expect to do Saturday is to show up prepared and ready to run the best 3.1 miles of my life. If that's not enough to win, so be it. But if I lose, it won't be due to a lack of effort."

Danny
Age: 27
Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 169

PRs:
10K - 49:54; Mud Run - 1:05:20. Also participated in Ragnar Relay Las Vegas.

Athletic Claim to Fame:
Lettered in track and soccer in high school.

Preferred Sport of Choice: Soccer; basketball is a close second.

Why Will He Win? Danny is the better athlete, period. He is faster than LB and all he needs to do is show up in the right frame of mind to win.

Why Won't He Win? Danny is not a runner, nor does he know how to handle a race. He might start way too fast and burn himself out or may not have the legs to sprint at the end if need be.

Motivation to Win:
Danny does not want to lose to LB in anything, whether it's a board game or a game of poker, let alone an athletic competition.

Race Strategy Should Be:
Get out in front and stay in front. LB won't be able to catch Danny if Danny gets in front from the start.

In His Own Words: "Luis is a trained distance runner. He has endurance and stamina and can likely outrun me in anything longer than a 10K. In a 5K, though, he has no shot at outrunning me. I have more speed and athleticism and both will carry me across the finish line before Luis on Saturday. I'm also pretty certain that I can beat him in a 1/2 marathon with training but that's a topic for another day... "

***

Well, there you go. The race broken down from various angles for you. Now, if you already voted and want to change your vote from LB to Danny, I won't hold it against you. Or if you still support yours truly, I'll try my best to bring home a win on Saturday.

So, do you have a preferred bookie for me to use, or will they have this on the boards in Vegas for me to use? I am sooooo putting money on the line for this one - I'm going with you, even though right now the odds are in favor of Danny 21:3 (that seconds) The pay out is better.
LOL! Can't wait for this! :)

I love your strategy. Good luck tripping him.

And was that a challenge for a half marathon I saw there, too?
