Not A Fan

I guess not everyone is a fan of running, nor does everyone have respect for runners.

This story here questions whether those participating in today's NYC Marathon are athletes, but goes beyond that and really slams all marathoners, well, all but the top 500 who are the true athletes, the writer says.

This story kind of hit me from behind as I wasn't expecting something this unflattering so I haven't quite yet wrapped my mind around it, and I do think I want to write something more than this on the matter. But still felt the urge to post it today since today is the NYC Marathon.

Off now to run 13 miles. Not that the writer of that blog post would give a crap...

How sad and negative. I think maybe he's just jealous he doesn't have it in him.

This post makes me sad :( And I have to say...although I am in awe of those elite athletes who can run 5 minute miles for 26 miles I am even more in awe of mr. joe shmoe average runner who actually had the courage to get up off the couch and train his butt off and run/walk his way to the finish line.

Athlete:

1. A person trained to compete in sports.[Wordnet]
2. One who contended for a prize in the public games of ancient Greece or Rome.[Websters]
3. Any one trained to contend in exercises requiring great physical agility and strength; one who has great activity and strength; a champion.

Honestly I hate the whole "label" thing our society has to have, how about people just do what they want, call themselves whatever they want and people shush it. If it doesn't hurt anyone else that they call themselves an athlete WHO CARES!!

An ignorant tirade from a couple of short sighted individuals. They obviously have no idea of the time and dedication that goes into training for a marathon. I don't know many (any) runners who go around labeling themselves as athletes. most runners i've come across are humble self-depricating people only striving to challenge themselves. We manifest that drive by running marathons.
