LB and the Mud Run

This week has been pretty crazy for me. I just got back from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Costa Rica (which I still have lots of thoughts and pictures to get out, so bear with me), am training for the Mud Run, still thinking about the Long Beach Marathon and thinking that I have to sign up soon if I want to do it and start training for it and then there's my trip next week to Montreal.

Did I mention I'm going to Montreal for six days? Well, I am. That's actually where we're celebrating (we being Mrs. LB and me) our 10 year anniversary. We planned this trip first since she had to go there for work and we figured I'd go and we could stay and hang out there for a few days. The Costa Rica trip was the same, except that one kind of came out of nowhere.

Anyway, smack in the middle of our tour of C countries (Croatia and Czech Republic are next... yeah, I wish) is the Mud Run. I don't think the traveling has taken away from anything about the race. It's less than 24 hours from now and I'm pumped for it. I had a great run on Wednesday and I feel confident that, with another run today, I'll be prepared for it.

It's funny how quickly things change. I remember last year dreading and looking forward to the Mud Run at the same time. I was dreading it because I hadn't ran more than six miles at once that much. I had, but only a handful of times. And this was my first big race. I had ran a 5K before that, but this was the biggie.

Now, I'm looking at the Mud Run as a great challenge but not quite the same Oh-my-goodness-there's-no-way-I-can-do-this challenge. It's fun, it's a great challenge, a great way to spend a Saturday. Only problem is the distance. Camp Pendleton is a good 70-80 miles from here, so right now I'm debating getting a hotel room down near the race site or getting up early on Saturday and driving down there.

Anyway, the Mud Run has become a part of my race calendar. We didn't sign up for the last Mud Run, to be held in mid-October, and that race sold out in early April. I'll have to wait until December to find out the dates for next year's Mud Runs, and then on Jan. 1 when registration opens I'm going to sign up for the race again, no matter what happens on Saturday.

Hopefully if things go well I'll be competing in the Camp Pendleton Mud Run year after year. I do have to live up to this blog's name after all, right?

Good luck tomorrow. I am seriously considering signing up for next year's race, but the 10K thing scares me. Just not sure I can do it.

Hi Mark! Thanks for the words of encouragement. I was worried too about the distance last year, but if you can run three miles without too many problems, you can train for this.

The hills are the worst part but there are some built-in breaks at the Mud Run. The river crossing is a chance to catch your breath and when you walk before and after the walls you are essentially resting from running.

Plus there are tables along the course so you could plan on taking a short break at each table so you don't feel like you have to try and run it all in one shot. I do that sometimes to fool myself; let myself feel like I can stop somewhere during a run and when I get there I just plow on through.

My friends and I are signing up again for next year. And we have others interested in going with us. L.B., I hope we get to meet at one of these.

Mark, I WALKED the entire 6.2 miles and still made it. Next year I intend to run a good part of it. You have a year to train. Don't let a 56-year-old fat woman put you to shame. :)

Good luck tomorrow, Luis! You only say "break a leg" to actors, right? Kidding, don't break anything but your record. Have fun!

Yes, but you are assuming I can run 3 miles without too many problems. :) The closest I've come was 2.5 miles. I had to walk the last half mile becuase my knees were hurting too much.

Still, I can't stop thinking about doing it. I have a feeling that comes January I'll be signing up for one of them.

Hey LB,
I am so sorry I didnt get a chance to get back to you yesterday, I was out and about all day.
Well, I think the idea you had about food will work.
Banana, or a similar fruit, than your energy bar about an hour before race, like you normally.
Best of luck today, cant wait to hear all about it!
